LIBRARY
Instructor: Mrs. Schmitt

Welcome!

Our library has a wonderful collection of fiction, non-fiction, and picture books.  We have a mini-lab of computers for research, writing, keyboarding, or taking Reading Counts quizzes.  Each classroom has a 40-45 minute period each week where students are exposed to a variety of genres and lessons.  Books are checked out for one week and returned or renewed on the student's library day.  It helps us keep the library running efficiently if books are returned on time.

Thanks,
Mrs. Schmitt & Mrs. Ellis

Dr. Seuss Day - March 2nd
In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, we will have guest readers come to each classroom to read their favorite Dr. Seuss book.  The Cat will be wandering around the school and will even teach a few library lessons.  Red & white cupcakes are always a special treat for this day!  Thanks goes to Mary K. Pratt for arranging our activities again this year.

Children's Choice Award
The Washington Children's Choice Award is a special honor for an author/illustrator.  In March, Valley View students (gades K-3) will vote for their favorite out of 20 nominees.  Mrs. Schmitt & classroom teachers read these books aloud between now and spring vacation.  Past nominees are favorites and always checked out.  I'm sure this year will be no exception as there are many great books on the list.  Try the link below to view the 2010 nominees.

Sasquatch Award Books
4th and 5th grade students are encouraged to read the nominees for the Washington State Sasquatch Award.  There are twelve books on this list but students only need to read 3 in order to vote in March.  In hopes of encouraging students to read more than 3, I have a tic-tac-toe board that students record the books read.  If a student reads 8 (and passes RC quiz) they will be invited to our Sasquatch pool party in June.  The deadline for this goal is March 19, 2010.

Reading Counts
Students in grades 1-5 are encouraged to take Reading Counts quizzes after they read a book.  Students earn points if they pass the quiz and earn prizes for the points.  The PTA has supported this program for years.  PTA money helps us continue to get new quizzes every month.  Scholastic has begun to write quizzes for non-fiction books as well as hundreds of new fiction titles each month.  We want students to read a variety of genres (types of books) so I am happy to see Scholastic is focusing on genres other than fiction.
